Land use activity/operations in the Sahtu region including those on crown and private lands are subject to the Mackenzie Valley Land Use Regulations. Applicants start the process by obtaining the permission of the land owner, and must consult with affected parties and communities.

Traditional Environmental Knowledge is considered by the Board in its decision making. A Preliminary Screening is the first step in an assessment process that determines whether there is significant environmental impact or public concern. Land Use Permits may be issued for up to five years, and extended once for up to two years (maximum seven years).
