All
non-domestic water use in the Sahtu is subject to the NWT Waters
Act and associated regulations. Many of the considerations used
in the Sahtu Land Use Permit process, including use of traditional
knowledge, and conformity with approved land use plans, are also
used in the review of Water Licence applications.
Type A Water Licences, usually issued for larger
developments, require a Public Hearing. They also require the approval
of the Federal Minister, and may include provision for a security
deposit, a requirement for water quality and quantity measurements,
and a requirement for abandonment and restoration plans.
